“Pianist John Funkhouser, bassist Greg Loughman and drummer Mike Connors manage to do what many -- if not most -- piano trios cannot. They create an ensemble that is good to listen to. Works such as the two-part "Prelude & Fugue in A Minor," "Ellipse" and "Ode to a Lame Duck" are not the heard-so-many times ballads or swing pieces played by most trios. The prelude of the former piece is subtitled "More Cowbell!" and is played solely on the drum kit and you know what. The fugue of that piece features more of the percussive line to tie them together. The time signatures in the original pieces bounce around in 11/8, 13/8, 7/8 and others, helping to create an unusual sound. But besides these pieces by the pianist, the album includes familiar pieces such as "Green Dolphin St.," "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Alone Together," all done in imaginative settings.”
